What inspired me to become a Naturopath?
My love-affair with natural medicine started a few years ago after the birth of my youngest child in 2012 when I had symptoms I could not understand and doctors couldn't explain - my inflammation levels were through the roof and I had significant pain ... Some general practitioners suggested it may be chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, osteopenia, beginning stages of multiple sclerosis ... Everyone wanted to put a label on my myriad of symptoms and some wrote it off as "it may be in your head", as if I needed attention ....
I took my 'grocery list' of symptoms and started to research it - making a mind-map of which systems in my body it came from. My initial reductionist mind-set wanted to address the organ, deal with it and fix myself. I soon realised that multiple organs and systems were involved and that I needed to get help with a holistic approach that focussed on the root cause of my symptoms.
I came across various international Integrative and holistic practitioner's online topics that made completely sense and inspired me to study Naturopathic Medicine ... which took 7 years part-time while I home-schooled my 'Biccard-bunch'. Needless to say, I am much better - I am walking, dancing and embracing every moment life has to offer.
I have realised how important balance in life needs to be, how unrealistic and unkind we are to ourselves. Functional Naturopathic Medicine is finding the balance in life, through nature, our spiritual life, whole-food nutrition, regular movement and our mental wellbeing.
